What is Microneedling?
This is a cosmetic procedure that uses a special roller device with tiny needles to induce tiny wounds within the skin cells. As the device passes over the skin’s surface, the needles gently separate the skin cells, forming “microchannels.” All of this occurs without harming or perforating the skin’s top layer. Instead, the microneedling device causes a mark that promotes the formation of new, fresh skin by stimulating the tissue.

Benefits of Microneedling
Microneedling has several benefits that make it popular in skin care, some of which include the following:
- Evens skin tone
- Firms and smooths skin texture
- Heals scars
- Lightens hyperpigmentation and sunspots
- Reduces acne scars
- Minimizes lips line
- Reduces the appearance of pores
- Restores the glow for fresher-looking skin
- Softens stretch marks
In addition, microneedling treatments are less expensive than laser treatments, which cost about four times more.
What Are the Targeted Areas for Microneedling?
Microneedling is most commonly used on the face. It can also be used to treat any area of skin afflicted by stretch marks or scarring, this might include arms, legs, backs, etc. However, people with a history of hemophilia, eczema, allergies, autoimmune illness, a history of cold sores, a history of cancer, a keloid tendency, any skin condition, or current infection of any sort should avoid microneedling procedures.
How Much Does Microneedling Cost?
The cost of a micro-needling treatment varies amongst providers. The application, the facility, the level of professionalism, what special devices were used or not used, the usage of a moisturizing mask after treatment, and the type of soothing collagen-promoting serum used after treatment are all factors that affect the PMU pricing of this procedure. However, it is worth the price if you have tried other approaches that don’t seem to show positive results.
How Microneedling Works
Microneedling works by inciting the production of collagen in the skin. The procedure causes minor skin irritation, and the skin responds to this by creating new tissue rich in collagen. Collagen loss is normal with age or injury to the skin. New collagen may help strengthen the skin by encouraging it to generate new tissue.
Potential Side Effects of Microneedling Procedure
This type of treatment’s side effects are limited and often involve slight flaking or drying of the skin, with some mild scab formation in rare cases. Infections are highly uncommon because the tiny pricking channels seal within minutes.
Getting Prerared for Microneedling Procedure
We usually discuss everything you need to know during our pre-procedure consultation. You may also consider speaking with your doctor about how to prepare for your appointment before the procedure. For example, certain drugs, such as ibuprofen and those used to treat acne, may need to be stopped before the treatment. It’s also a good idea to avoid using products that could make your skin more sensitive. For example, before your microneedling appointment, you may be advised to discontinue exfoliants and topical retinoids.
Microneedling Procedure Instructions
Before
- Avoid using acne medications for several weeks to months before the procedure.
- Avoid taking antibiotics, exfoliants, and acids that may be drying or irritating to the skin for at least a week before your appointment.
- Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil for 3 days prior to treatment. They will interfere with the natural inflammatory process which is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.
- No shaving on the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation.
After
- Avoid touching your face. Your skin is open, and if it comes in contact with any unsterile surface, dirt and bacteria can cause an infection.
- Sleep on a fresh, clean pillowcase.
- For the rest of the day, keep the treated area away from sunlight.
- No makeup of any kind for at least 24 hours. It can cause irritation or infection.
- Avoid sweating for 48 hours: no exercise, saunas, steam baths, or jacuzzis.
About Microneedling Procedure
A micro-needling procedure can last between 30-45 minutes, depending on the method, the area of the skin treated, and the instrument used. Sterile needles are used for safety and precision. After removing makeup and cream residues from the skin, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to numb your skin. Next, the microneedling artist uses a derma stamp, derma roller, or derma pen to make tiny punctures on the targeted area. Finally, a saline solution, ice pack, or hydration mask is applied to the treated area.
It should be noted that minor pinpoint bleeding may occur in some cases, which is not cause for concern because it is readily controlled.

Microneedling Aftercare
As with other treatments, such as permanent eyeliner, you must avoid the sun for several days after your session to allow your skin to heal. Sunscreen is essential when spending time outside. Most patients are encouraged to use a moisturizer to aid healing and keep their skin from drying out. You should also avoid wearing makeup for a few days.

Why Is Microneedling Aftercare Necessary?
During a Microneedling Treatment, a microneedling tool – either a dermapen or a dermaroller – makes tiny ‘perforations’ on the skin which leave microchannels which allow products to penetrate the skin deeper, but have another benefit.
The skin will start a recovery process to close up the microchannels, and the new skin cells that are produced will be healthy and damage-free, resulting in a gradually better structure and appearance of the skin.
However, the microchannels aren’t closed up immediately. Depending on the length of the needles and subsequent penetration depth, it will take more or less time for them to close up and for the skin to recover.
How Long Do I Have to Practice the Microneedling Aftercare Routine?
If you had a professional treatment, you should follow the Microneedling aftercare routine for about 2 weeks. If you’re doing it by yourself, a few days should be fine.
The exception is wearing SPF, which you should do for as long as possible. SPF is generally beneficial, as it prevents skin from sunlight damage and you should include it in your daily routine if you haven’t already. Just make sure to find a non-clogging formula.
What Happens if I Don’t Follow Microneedling Aftercare Instructions?
The need for the Microneedling aftercare stems mostly from the fact that the skin is broken and thus susceptible to irritation and infection until it’s closed up the microchannels.
The micro injuries are created with the idea to trigger the skin’s natural processes of regeneration and increased production of collagen and elastin. Using products which aren’t approved can disrupt these processes and limit the success of the treatment.
So, if you fail to stick to Microneedling aftercare instructions, you risk endangering your health and minimizing the success of the treatment.
Microneedling: Does it Hurt?
