What is Vitiligo and what can help you deal with it? Vitiligo is the loss of natural skin pigment in the affected areas. White or pinkish spots appear on a person’s skin, which differ from their main skin color. The causes of this physiological process are not yet fully studied. But often Vitiligo can be associated with an autoimmune reaction of the body. Sometimes it appears immediately at birth, for others with age.
Today, the most effective and safe method of masking Vitiligo is to camouflage it with the help of permanent makeup. Depigmented areas of the skin can be different in complexity, quite large in size, and heterogeneous in tone. Quite often, they gradually increase in size and tend to merge into a single large spot as a result of a decrease in the concentration of melanin. So, only a true professional can handle the task. Permanent make-up can reconstruct pigmentation using camouflage techniques.

About the Vitiligo Camouflage procedure
The essence of the Vitiligo Camouflage procedure is the injection of coloring pigment into the upper layers of the skin. It resembles permanent makeup treatment, but a pigment is selected as similar as possible to the natural color of the skin. As a result, the affected area is evened out in tone – visually, it becomes absolutely identical to the color of normal skin.
The pigment is injected by the micropigmentation specialist using a special machine with a sharp sterile needle (similar to the permanent make-up tattoo procedure). After several years, pigment is removed from the tissues, but if visiting correction procedures in time, this process can be slowed down.
The area and size of the spots, the process of pigment loss, the rate of progression (growth) are individual. Vitiligo can be unpredictable. This is the reason for the complexity of the work of a permanent makeup artist. Even after the best, successful camouflage, patches can grow over time. Then you need to repeat the cosmetic procedure and correction.
The work is time-consuming; in difficult cases it might be quite lengthy, requiring accuracy and responsibility from the artist. The specialist always needs to choose the right color: sometimes they can mix two, three, or more shades.
Thanks to the Camouflage technique, a lot of clients at Anna Kara’s Studio in San Diego (CA) have the opportunity to regain self-confidence. We have a lot of reviews about it online.
It is important to highlight that Vitiligo Camouflage is an absolutely safe procedure. The cells of the epidermis are not destroyed or exposed to any aggressive effects. The skin is only tinted to the desired shade, but does not change the structure.

How many procedures do I need for a stable effect?
To achieve the best visual effect, it is usually necessary to undergo several procedures, and their number is determined by the characteristics (color and type) of the skin, as well as the type of affected area. The number of remedial procedures for Vitiligo Camouflaging can vary from 1 to 8 or more.
How is remedial Vitiligo Camouflage procedure carried out?
Vitiligo Camouflage is performed in several main steps:
- Initial consultation to meet the client, examine the affected area, and evaluate the possibility of its correction. During the consultation, the client can be advised on the number of procedures to achieve the desired result and whether the area can be evened fully or not.
- The ‘Before’ picture. All artists need a constantly updated portfolio, so they take the BEFORE and AFTER pictures of the areas they work on. Of course, they should ask for your consent.
- Pigment shade selection. The goal of the procedure is to cover the affected area with the perfect shade of pigment to match the natural skin tone. Every tone is individual and specialists are supposed to know color theory to be able to mix the shades and find a perfect one. The result totally depends on this.
- Numbing cream. Although the depth of the needle penetration is no more than 1mm, it is still penetration. So, to avoid any discomfort during the remedial procedure and let the client feel absolutely comfortable, the artist uses anesthesia (numbing cream) which is applied to the skin shortly before the procedure.
- Tattooing itself. The artist carefully passes the machine over the skin, filling the desired areas with pigment. The duration of this process mainly depends on the size of the area.
- The ‘After’ picture.
- Aftercare instructions. After completing the work, the artist gives the client detailed aftercare instructions to follow to prolong the effect of the procedure for as long as possible.
Is Vitiligo Camouflage a safe treatment?
The procedure is absolutely safe if it is performed by a professional artist. This procedure cannot lead to the damage of large vessels or nerve plexuses. Plus, the artist carries out the procedure of Vitiligo Camouflage only with a sterile needle in sterile gloves. So, no worries.

What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a genetic, autoimmune skin disease causing loss of pigment from areas of the skin, resulting in irregular white spots or patches. Vitiligo affects about 0.5% to 1% of the population and can start at any age, but about half of those with vitiligo develop it before the age of 20, and about 95% before age 40. It affects all genders, and all races and ethnicities.
When can I apply makeup on the treated skin?
During the first five days after treatment, you should not apply makeup on the treated area. The area needs to be kept dry! After five days, the skin is closed which means that infections can no longer occur and makeup can be applied again.
What can I expect after the first Vitiligo Camouflage session?
You will see the results right away! After each session the pigment will appear more intense and will lighten up in time for your next session where we add more pigment. After each session, the color fades less until the color is matched and blended.
Your skin will be a little red and irritated between 3-10 days after each appointment. It will remind a sun burn. No makeup or skin care products can be used on this area for 7 days. After 7 days, you can use your normal products again.
