What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a medical, non-surgical, cosmetic tattoo that consists of spot application of pigment into the upper layers of the scalp skin with a thin needle.

It reminds hair tattoo, creates the illusion of a short haircut, or adds some color and volume to the scalp areas. This is a quick way to hide thinning hair and baldness. It makes the illusion of thicker hair. The procedure is effective in the presence of scars, post-operative scars that prevent normal hair growth, and Alopecia.

SMP is performed with highly specialized equipment. Each treatment is to fit your specific skin tone and the shape of your scalp. When performed by a skilled professional, Scalp Micropigmentation is to resemble the look of a traditional haircut or to fill in any areas of the scalp that have hair loss and are patchy.

The Process of Scalp Micropigmentation

The process typically begins with a consultation, where clients discuss the expectations, procedure process, and all the details.

The permanent makeup artist inserts pigment on the desired area of the scalp. The dots done by the needle can be different in color, size, and angle.

Most clients usually take 3 to 4 sessions to get the desired results. Each procedure adds more pigment to create the look of thicker hair.

Scalp Micropigmentation procedure process

1. Getting prepared for the procedure. After a thorough examination and identification of the characteristics of the scalp and skin, the optimal application technique is determined. At this time, a sketch is being drawn, and a shade is selected. If high-quality hypoallergenic pigments are used, then allergy tests can be omitted.
2. Area preparation. The treated area is cleaned and treated with antiseptic, and numbing is applied to it.
3. Carrying out a tattoo. The pigment is injected with a special machine under the surface layers of the epidermis. Artists can use 2 techniques here, the choice depends on the length of the existing hair or its absence.
4. Recovery period. In order to avoid inflammatory reactions and accelerate the regeneration process of the scalp, it is treated with restorative compounds and antibacterial agents. The final effect is achieved after several procedures, it lasts for 3 years.

During the second and following treatments, artists fill in the gaps and go a shade darker if you’d like.

Aftercare Instructions and recovery after the procedure

After the procedure, the artists at our Anna Kara’s Beauty PMU studio (San Diego, CA, USA) provide clients with Aftercare instructions.

For the first 2 days after the procedure, the skin might be a little reddened – this is normal. On the third day, it will peel off and take on crusts. Please avoid them tearing them off. Instead, you can apply some moisturizer, but do not rub it intensively.

At first, the pigment will look very bright, but after a couple of weeks, it will acquire the desired shade.

While the healing period is going on, the head skin cannot be washed. Visits to the sauna or bath are also contraindicated for a month. Over time, when going out under the scorching sun, you need to use sunscreens with a high value: SPF 50 and above.

During 2-3 years, the pigment will be fading, which means you should make a new appointment for your touch-up.
